Rambles from the Rest

Walk the Ancient Ridgeway

Just one kilometre from the yurt, the Ridgeway National Trail makes The Agrarian’s Rest an ideal stopping point for long-distance walkers, as well as a restorative base for those wishing to explore shorter, soul-lifting sections of Britain’s oldest road.

Shaped over more than 5,000 years, the Ridgeway was once walked by herdsmen, pilgrims and kings. Today, it unfolds across open downland and wide Wiltshire skies, offering space, stillness and perspective. Whether you are pausing mid-journey or walking at your own gentle pace, this ancient path invites presence and renewal.

Liddington Hill Fort

Rising quietly above the Downs, Liddington Hill Fort is one of Wiltshire’s oldest and most commanding ancient sites. Bronze Age in origin, its vast earthworks reward walkers with panoramic views across the Vale and beyond. Reached easily from the Ridgeway, it is a place to linger, breathe deeply, and feel the deep time of the landscape beneath your feet.

Barbury Castle & the Hackpen White Horse

Further along the Downs lie the sweeping ramparts of Barbury Castle, an Iron Age stronghold set high above the Marlborough Downs. From here, walkers are treated to far-reaching views across the Vale of Pewsey and towards the Cotswolds.

Nearby, the White Horse of Hackpen, etched into the chalk hillside, is a striking landmark best appreciated on foot, where the scale and quiet drama of the land reveal themselves slowly.

Avebury & Silbury Hill

At the heart of this sacred landscape lies Avebury Stone Circle, the largest prehistoric stone circle in Britain. Wander freely among the standing stones, then continue to Silbury Hill, Europe’s largest man-made prehistoric mound. Together, they form a World Heritage landscape rich in myth, mystery and quiet awe.

West Kennet Long Barrow

Just beyond Avebury, West Kennet Long Barrow invites you into its ancient chambers — a Neolithic burial site over 5,000 years old. Set on a gentle rise near the Ridgeway, it is a place of hushed reflection and timeless calm.
